Foot Prints In The Sand!!

Looking back  at my journey as an ITDE student at Nova Southeastern University , I can appreciate the value working with others. We do not each possess all the answers, we may have a fraction of the solution and someone else has the remainder, hence the significance of networking and collaborating. Things are not always as they appear at first glance;, often times we need to take a deeper and more thorough examination of all the parts. Collaborating with others saves time, reduces frustration, and provides guidance. As managers we need to keep an open mind and be willing to admit that our way may not always be the correct way. We must listen to others and be willing to lend a helping hand. Be flexible, be aware of alternative solutions, be not afraid to fail because it is from failures that we learn the value of being right. Finally, we must be willing to accept and integrate change, after all we live in a technologically dynamic era and we will be left behind if we refuse to embrace change! Below are some of the most memorable experiences as an ITDE doctoral student in the form  major assignments:

Doctoral Course Work Pieces

This is a very brief (less than 2 minutes) video on my daughter as she plays the piano, for her after-school extra-curricula activity. It includes various titles, shots (long, wide, and close-up), cuts, transitions, and audio. This was one of my first media assignments in the programme and the experience was awesome. Video Assignment - Allicyan on Keyboard

Photo Shoot

For this activity I was required to select a subject (a person) and make two portraits: a wide, environmental portrait and a close-up (tight) portrait. I placed the two photos and a credit line (my name as well as the name of the program) on a single PowerPoint slide. On two additional (linked) slides, I provided a brief description of the portraits and the person who is the subject as well as a rationale for my choice of subject, the chosen locations, and poses.  The photo may be viewed in the PPT file on the right.

Audio Assignment - Interview
Unknown Track - Unknown Artist
00:00 / 00:00

This is a brief recording of an interview, approximately two minutes, bewteen myself and my son, a science student. The interview recording was digitally editted and saved as mp3 file. Click the play button on the right to listen to the interview session.

10 Guiding Principles of Instructional Technology & Distance Education
Storyboard - 10 Guiding Principles of Instructional Technology & Distance Education

This multimedia production was themed “The 10 Guiding Principles of Instructional Technology and Distance Education.” This assignment offered us the opportunity to integrate course content and showcase our grasp of educational media design and production. These 10 guiding principles that were compiled are the ten most important principles guiding decisions in the field. This multimedia production integrated at least three media, in addition to text—video (motion media), audio, and still images (e.g., photographs, graphics, images). This is, basically, the planning/design phase of the multimedia production on "The 10 Guiding Principles of Instructional Technology and Distance Education. The storyboard was developed in PowerPoint; it includes still imagees for the visuals, production notes, and a narrative/script. Print-based Lesson

Instructional Design is one of the fundamental/elemtary courses in the program; it is one of the first courses taken in the concentration. I was required to apply the Dick and Carey instructional design model in a series of assignments, ultimately, to design a print or paper based set of instructional materials. The first idea that popped into my mind was to design instructional materials that directs learners how to format a computer that is running Windows Vista and load Windows 7. The instructional material was self-instructional, print-based materials that do not require the facilitation or intervention of an instructor. It comprised of a set of procedures and directions intended to aid the employees of an Internet Café (or any similar establishments) to format computer that are utilizing Windows Vista operating system and to load Windows 7. The instructions were designed to not exceed 30 minutes, after which time the learner (s) should have accomplished the tasks of formatting the computer and loading Windows 7.

The instructional materials and formative assessment may be viewed on the right. Click on the image for an expanded view.

System Design

This was my first Elluminate presentation and I was super nervous. It was a ten-minute live presentation to the class via Elluminate. For System Aanalysis & Design I was required to develop a grant proposal in which I had to aalyze an educational system, and then enhance the system by designing a distance learning component for the system. To do this, I had to conduct a needs assessment, develop a data collection plan, and instrument. I also had to propose a timeline and budget for the project. The PowerPoint presentation of the proposal may be viewed by clicking on the PDF file on the right.

Professional Practices in ITDE

During the compilation of this assignment I learned so much about the Nigerian Culture. I was tasked to

profile a professional in the field of instructional technology and prepare a multimedia product that includes a brief podcast that includes text, photos/graphics, music, and narration. I figured that it would be interesting to profile Isaac Onywere, Head of the ICT Department at Bethlehem Moravian College because of his active involvement in my chosen field. He was one of the first IT instructor, an advocate for IT and DE integration in Jamaica’s curriculum, and an immigrant who spent more than half of his life in Jamaica. Watch this podcast by clicking on the play button in te center of the video on the right.

Advance Application of ITDE

This assignment was two-fold; I was required to produce a video and a companion journal article, which was subsequently published in Distance Learning.

The video explained a distance education application, E-learning Jamaica Initiative, using still and motion images with a “voiceover” narration. The video has both newly recorded information and information from other sources. I wrote the narration, which was originally recorded for this assignment. The video included segments with live video where persons were talking and being recorded.

The companion article is directly related to the video. Click the play button on the video on the right to view the podcast and the link below to access the article.
